Disposition of Remains Document

Disposition of Remains (DOR) *

A Disposition of Remains document appoints an agent to make funeral and burial decisions on your behalf.

Some common questions we receive about the Disposition of Remains include:

Why do I need (or not need) a Disposition of Remains Document?

In Virginia, your next of kin must sign off on your funeral arrangement and method that your remains are handled, including choices like cremation and burial. If there is any dispute among your next of kin, the court may have to get involved.

The Disposition of Remains document allows you to appoint someone who will perform the sign-off. It also allows you to clearly express your wishes.

Who Should I Appoint as Agent?

When choosing an agent for this role, consider individuals in your life who are capable and in a position to best follow your wishes. Make sure to store this document with any funeral or burial plans you have arranged.

Custom Estate Planning provides a Disposition of Remains document in both the Will Package and the Trust Package, but it can also be created as a stand-alone document upon request.
